UNSPEAKABLE 2 Corinthians 9:15 by Cooper P. Abrams III |
|
Introduction: "Unspeakable" is a wonderful word.
Often in studying the Word of God, some I have seen some special incite into a spiritual truth. OH, my heart rejoiced to see it.
Some times I have tried to explain it to others and found myself at a lost for words to adequately convey it to someone else.
You find that in the same thing in the Bible. That inability to really put into words or express a truth you see.
After His resurrection the Lord appeared to two men who were on the way to Emmaus. The men did not know that it was Jesus they were talking to and they told Jesus the reports of His resurrection. Jesus then went through the Old Testament prophecies of His coming and expounded them to these men. In Luke 24:31, the Lord opened their eyes and they knew who He was and He vanished from their sight. Verse 32 says, “And they said one to another, Did not our heart burn within us, while he talked with us by the way, and while he opened to us the scriptures?’ In hearing Jesus expound the Messianic passages in the Old Testament...their hearts burned inside them. In verse 35, the passage says they went to the disciples and "And they "TOLD" about the things that had happened on the road, and how He was known to them in the breaking of bread."
In John 1:18, the word is used again: "No one has seen God at any time. The only begotten Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, He has DECLARED Him."
The common root word for these words is also in the word "exegesis."
The word exegete means to explain.
Here it can refer to "a gift of whose meaning there can be not adequate exegesis" or we might say, "whose whole contents no guide can explore and open up and exhibit to his fellow explorers."
It is something very special we see but cannot fully relate to others.
In studying the riches of the Word of God we will discover much, and fine great wealth, but there never can be an end to the discovery.
I am NOT satisfied with my Knowledge of the Bible and of God! I have learned much, but there is so much more to know. I have walked with the Lord for many years, and it has be exciting and rewarding beyond my wildest dreams.
Over half my life I lived without Christ, I know the difference, between living for the Lord and living for self.
Every turn in the road is a new experience in seeing the Lord working. The Lord works most times in silent ways. Not out in the open for gawking eyes of the unbelieving world to question and ridicule....but unnoticed and unseen except to the spiritual eyes of one who loves his Lord.
It has been said that the person who claims to have arrived in maturity in his spiritual life and knowledge of God, . . .is a thousands miles from the station.
"And if anyone thinks that he knows anything, he knows nothing yet as he ought to know." (1 Cor. 8:2)
The word "unspeakable" is found only three times in the Bible. Although in each place the word is used, you find a different Greek word, the are all synonymous in meaning.
God has given the believer all he needs and we can understand ....but clearly there is much more to learn!
I am not saying we cannot learn of God, or that there are any secrets about God, what I am saying related to the vastness and immensity of God. It is a declaration of His greatest and glory how His limitless and has not bounds. Even the smallest portion of God fills we mortals to the brim.
Note what 1 Corinthians 2:9 tells us:
"But as it is written: "Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, nor have entered into the heart of man the things which God has prepared for those who love Him." (1 Cor. 2:9)
NOTE: The last words of the verse, "for those who love him." For those who believe, who trust Jesus Christ and who live for Him, faithfully obeying His will for our lives it is something we cannot put in human terms. Sadly, for those who chose to live a part from Him they will never know the peace and joy of salvation and of having a relationship with their Creator.
There are three spiritual treasures revealed in the three uses of these word in the New Testament.
I. GOD'S UNSPEAKABLE GIFT---SALVATION. 2 Cor. 9:15
A. Word here means, "unexpressible."
1. We can not express or fully comprehend what the truth value of salvation is.
2. We can know of the joy and peace that comes with having God's promise of forgiveness and eternal life. Of being delivered from this cruel and sinful world. Of overcoming death....yet with all our understanding is it is but a shadow of the great worth and benefit of salvation to us.
B. This is Paul's third letter to the Corinthians. He had rebuked them for sin in their congregation and they have repented. Yet he further challenged them to continue to be generous to their giving. He was asking them to help Titus financially also.
1. He commended them for there past generosity, stating that in doing so they had greatly honored the Lord, showing their love of God.
2. He says they were a real testimony to other believers in other churches. Paul said he had praised their faithfulness to other churches.
3. Based on their faithfulness has mentioned in Ch. 8-9, he makes the statement of V15. Thanks {be} to God for His indescribable gift! (2 Cor. 9:15)
4. NOTE V13. They glorified God. V12, states it was a means of thanksgiving to God.
5. It means the reward of faithfulness is beyond our ability to comprehend of express.
C. Why would anyone reject the life God has for them? Why would anyone chose to live a part from God. God's purpose is that a man live the very best life possible! That's God's plan. Yet, so many choose a live without Christ.
1. For Christ not to be "preeminent" is to reject God's will for one's life. (Col. 1:18)
2. To chose not to obey the Word of God is clearly outside God's plan. In Jesus's day there were those who claimed to be His disciples, and they called Him, Lord.
Yet, Christ said to them, "Why do you call me Lord, Lord, and do not the things I say."
It is easy to call Christ Lord, but the test of one's salvation or ones relationship to Christ is in how we live our lives.
D. The benefit of salvation is indescribable.
1. If you were given the choice of a wonderful mountain home, with all the convinces and a beautiful view or a tenant flat in an LA slum, what would you chose?
2. Choice is obvious, isn't it? Why is it not that clear for a man in choosing to trust Christ and receive salvation or die without Christ and spent an eternity in Hell?
3. Why is it that so many will not let Him be a real part of their lives. Some even who claim to know Christ as Lord and Savior, continue to love the world and reject God's Will for their lives.
4. We have a carnal nature. God says it will only lead to destruction. Living as the carnal nature leads never brings any true satisfaction, no true peace or joy. It is in true a rejection of the cure for our problems and help we all desperately need.
5. Why chose destruction, why chose to live in a slum? Why devote our lives to worldly things that will one day vanish away and be of no use to us. Why carry the burdens of this life alone, when we can live in the joy, peace and satisfaction of living for God? Why chose Hell instead of Heaven?
II. GOD'S UNSPEAKABLE WORDS---THE SCRIPTURES! 2 Corinthians 12:1-4
A. The word used here means "to sacred to be uttered."
1. When Paul was in Paradise he heard words that were unspeakable.
2. It means what he saw he was incapable of translation into human and earthly words or understanding.
B. The things Paul was told to communicate to all he freely preached. He preached under the power and direction of the Holy Spirit.
1. Paul discloses little about heaven.
"For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known." (1 Corinthians 13:12)
"For we know that if our earthly house, this tent, is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. For in this we groan, earnestly desiring to be clothed upon with our house which is from heaven” (2 Corinthians 5:1-2).
Philippians 3:20-21 says:
"For our citizenship is in heaven, from which we also eagerly wait for the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, who will transform our lowly body that it may be conformed to His glorious body, according to the working by which He is able even to subdue all things to Himself."
John tells us more: "They shall hunger no more, neither
thirst any more; neither shall the sun light on them, nor any heat." (Revelation 7:16)
2. God says it will be greater than we presently with our human minds can comprehend. DO you believe God? Do you really believe HIM?
3. Jesus in Matt. 13:45-46, (Matthew 13:45-46)
"Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant seeking beautiful pearls, who, when he had found one pearl of great price, went and sold all that he had and bought it."
4. In the next two verse Jesus gave another parable, the parable of the dragnet.
Matthew 13:47-50,
"Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a dragnet that was cast into the sea and gathered some of every kind, which, when it was full, they drew to shore; and they sat down and gathered the good into vessels, but threw the bad away. So it will be at the end of the age. The angels will come forth, separate the wicked from among the just, and cast them into the furnace of fire. There will be wailing and gnashing of teeth."
C. Folks God's word can be of unlimited benefit to us. BUT only if it is followed. Only if it is believed.
1. I really believe many folks think they believe the Bible, and yet do not.
2. The test a mentioned earlier is simple. IF you believe you will obey, you will follow God's instruction.
3. It is just a basic truth, that God's people, true believers, will be students of the Bible, will be worshipers of God in God's house, they will be givers, and most of all -- folks who pray and study GOD's Word.
No pastor ought ever to have to beg believers to do right....believers love God, because they have believed and they will do right.
III. GOD'S UNSPEAKABLE JOY---THE SAVIOR.(1 Peter 1:6-9)
A. Each one of the words has a little different slant to its meaning. . . here it means that the Joy of Christ is beyond ones ability to tell.
1. Have you ever been so happy you could not talk or explain how you felt?
2. That's what is in view here!
B. Folks that is what Salvation brings.
1. That's what it should bring in a believer's life.
2. How shall we know it? By taking it, by simple child like faith, believing what God has said.
C. There are even some professing Christian who have not experienced this joy.
1. It may be possible they are not saved, having only a head knowledge of Christ Jesus.
Rom 10:9-10
2. Note the verse says salvation is a HEART matter.
D. The only way to know this joy is to live it. I can read a lot about wonderful places. I have travel brochures...yet until I go there and experience them I can not know.
1. To have the joy of the Lord you must live for the Lord.
2. To know the joy and peace of God's presence in your life you must allow Him to have a relationship with you.
3. You can not ignore Him, and experience the Love and Joy of Christ.
Conclusion:
1. The invitation is clear. Does no the word of God that is preached here this morning burn in your heart. That is the Holy Spirit bring conviction....that means God is helping you to understand, He is seeking to draw you unto Himself.
2. God is giving you a choice. That choice is clear. To chose God and life or to chose to live by our own means....and live a poor life a part from Him.
3. Many years ago a man name Joshua beckoned the Children of Israel. The choice was clear. Chose to serve the Lord, or to serve the god of this evil world.
Joshua boldly proclaimed....”but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.”
Would you too...today believe God’s promises to us and ask the Lord to forgive your sins and save you. He promises to immediately give eternal life, to come into your life and be you comforter and guide. And when death comes....to take you to heave to be with Him.
