We talk with many Christians who get frustrated when trying to communicate with a Mormon. Unfortunately there isn't a magical button we can push for the blinders to come off and have them instantly come to the knowledge of truth. However, one question that will hopefully challenge them to re-examine their faith is this: "If I accept you as a Christian, will you accept me as a Mormon?"

This is a sensitive issue with Mormons because they believe they are, above all else, Christians. The late Mormon Apostle, Bruce R. McConkie, stated:

"Mormons are true Christians; their worship is the pure, unadulterated Christianity authored by Christ and accepted by Peter, James and John and all the ancient saints." (Mormon Doctrine, pg. 513)

But imagine the Mormon's reaction to a statement like this: I'm a Mormon but I don't believe Joseph Smith was a true prophet of God. I'm a Mormon but I don't believe the Book of Mormon is the word of God. I'm a Mormon but I don't believe in baptism for the dead. I'm a Mormon but I don't believe in the Mormon priesthood, etc.

[Editor's note: This is another way of stating the question: Suppose that I started a new religion which was totally different in doctrine from the LDS church, to the extent that I even denied the identity of who the LDS god was, would you think me to be a Mormon? ] A Mormon would quickly deny that such a person could be a real Mormon. Obviously a person who claims to be a Mormon and doesn't accept the very doctrine that make Mormons what they are, can't be one. In the same way, it must be conceded that a Mormon who claims to be a Christian cannot deny those doctrines that make Christians what they are. The two religions are just not compatible!

Hopefully this line of communication will open up further comparisons and cause your Mormon friends to take a closer look a their faith and get them to thinking about their doctrines. And remember out authority in Christ allows us, yes even commands us, to "go and tell." 2 Cor. 3:5-6 says:

"Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think any thing as of ourselves; but our sufficiency is of God; Who also hath made us able ministers of the new testament. . . (KJV)"

It is the work of the Holy Spirit to convict and bring souls unto Him.
